First look at the design of the new Northeast Building at Albury Hospital campus

Residents of the border towns have had their first look at the designs for the new Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital project’s Northeast Building, which will be built as part of the early works.

The two-storey building will support a range of health services and staff to enable the future construction of the new 7 storey Clinical Services Building. The new Northeast Building is also being built with the flexibility to provide opportunities for future service expansion.

This milestone marks a key step forward in the $558 million investment of the Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital project to support the healthcare needs of the border communities now and into the future.

Once operational, the Northeast Building will include:

  • Allied Health clinical spaces, including a gymnasium and consultation rooms

  • Outpatients including Specialist Outpatient Clinics, Cardiac Clinic, Pre-admission clinics

  • Administrative areas for health services

  • Pharmacy

  • Conference Rooms and Library

  • Medical Staff Lounge.

"The first look at the design for the new Northeast Building marks a significant step forward in the delivery of the new Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital project,” said Health Infrastructure’s Executive Director, Rural and Regional Amanda Bock.

“This development demonstrates our commitment to investing in health infrastructure to support better health outcomes for the Border communities.

“I look forward to seeing construction start this year and the positive impact this project will have on the region."

The design of the new Northeast Building has been informed by clinicians and hospital staff who will be located in the new building.

New on-grade parking will also be provided to offset the impact of the new building on existing parking arrangements across campus.

The community is being invited to view the new designs with the next round of community information sessions planned in the coming weeks to support the public exhibition of planning documents for early works, which includes construction for the Northeast Building. Work is expected to start this year, pending statutory planning approvals and appointment of a contractor.

Planning and design for the Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital project is progressing, which will consolidate complex care on the Albury campus to improve safety for patients, reduce the duplication of services and need for urgent travel between the Wodonga and Albury campuses.

The project includes a new multi-storey Clinical Services Building and will deliver a mix of new and refurbished facilities with cutting-edge medical technology. It is expected to include:

  • More than 80 additional beds for medical and surgical care across three new inpatient units, with 60 per cent single rooms and the remainder double rooms.

  • New and enhanced Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

  • Enhanced maternity and birthing services, including a special care nursery

  • A 32-bed Mental Health Inpatient Unit to replace and expand the existing Nolan House 24-bed service

  • New surgical and operating theatres, including a hybrid theatre plus procedure room

  • New Cardiac Catheter Lab

  • New central sterile supply department adjacent to theatres

  • Expanded ambulatory care, cardiac diagnostics and allied health therapies

  • New hospital main entrance and public drop-off zone from Keene Street, Aboriginal Family Lounge, Multi-faith Centre and retail opportunities

  • Additional car parking.

Numbers will be finalised as planning and design progresses.
