This week, NSW Health launched its first ever Net Zero Roadmap, marking a major milestone in our commitment to reducing emissions and building a more climate-resilient health system.
The Roadmap sets out clear priorities for the next six years, providing a framework to help achieve the NSW Government’s targets of a 70% reduction on 2005 levels by 2035 and net zero emissions by 2050.
NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce AM said the health of the planet was intrinsically linked with human health and this strategy would support a healthier and more sustainable community.
“The healthcare sector has historically been a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and we all need to play our part to create a cleaner, more sustainable future.” Ms Pearce said.
As the infrastructure delivery arm for NSW Health, Health Infrastructure can drive real change in decarbonising health capital projects.
Health Infrastructure’s Acting Chief Executive Amanda Bock, said, “It’s been fantastic to see the collective commitment across our health agencies, and the recognition that infrastructure plays a pivotal role in delivering real environmental outcomes.”
Amanda Bock also observed that, “HI has already started progressing key directions under the Roadmap with electrifying new builds and creating project-specific sustainability plans and climate risk assessments at the earliest stage of planning.”
HI’s Sustainability team is working closely with industry to align future projects with evolving policy and best practice, including Green Star certification requirements. These requirements embed circular economy principles, improve waste and water management systems and strengthen partnerships with Aboriginal communities through acknowledging the importance of stewardship and caring for Country.
