The $411 million St George Hospital Redevelopment Stage 3 has topped off a year of major construction with the new nine-storey Kensington Street Building celebrating new heights.
Premier Chris Minns and Member for Rockdale Steve Kamper toured the site for a traditional ‘topping out’ ceremony to mark the building reaching its highest point of construction.
New flythrough animation of the redevelopment is also providing the community with a virtual look inside the new building, due for completion in late 2025.
Up to 250 construction workers are currently on the building site each day. The redevelopment is supporting approximately 750 direct jobs, with the potential for supporting thousands of indirect jobs over the life of the project.
Construction of the new building is expected to be completed in late 2025, with the landscaping, including a new public forecourt and green spaces, and final refurbishment works to be completed in 2026.
Once complete, health services will include:
Alongside the consolidation of existing services, the new building will include a Rehabilitation Cognitive Transition Unit, providing structured rehabilitation for patients with mild to moderate acquired brain injuries, enhancing cognitive recovery and transition planning after treatment.
It will also include a Behavioural Support Unit, designed to treat and manage complex age-related cognitive conditions, including dementia and delirium, providing support for both clinical and behavioural needs.
The Stage 3 Redevelopment complements the previously completed Emergency Department, nine-level Acute Services Building and upgraded Birthing Suite and Operating Theatre redevelopment.
