The expansion of John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospitals will begin next month, with Multiplex Constructions awarded the contract for enabling works for the new state-of-the-art facility.
The NSW Government’s $835 million investment in the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct will deliver expanded and enhanced health services, set to transform health care for the Hunter region.
John Hunter Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in the state and, with the region’s population set to increase 22 per cent over the next 15 years, this expansion will ensure Newcastle, greater Hunter and northern NSW communities have access to cutting-edge health care services now and into the future.
The expansion will include construction of a new seven-storey Acute Services Building which will see a 60 per cent increase in Intensive Care Unit capacity and almost 50 per cent more theatres.
The new Emergency Department will see treatment spaces for patients increase by almost 40 per cent and new spaces for women and children, including paediatric and neonatal intensive care units, as well as two inpatient units.
The redevelopment will provide work opportunities for local builders, sub-contractors and tradespeople throughout construction, with information sessions for interested businesses taking place in the coming months.
The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct will include:

operating theatres, interventional and procedure spaces

new birthing suite and inpatient maternity unit

new neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery

rooftop helipad and increased car parking with more than 900 spaces for staff and visitors
The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct will also support research and innovation, driving collaborations between the health, education and research sectors, to improve patient outcomes.
Enabling works will begin this month with main works expected to begin later in the year. The project is scheduled for completion in 2026.
