Westmead’s world-class hospital heralds new era in health

Monday 22 March 2021

Western Sydney celebrated a major healthcare milestone today with the opening of Westmead’s state-of-the-art central acute services hospital building.

The hospital building – which was completed three months ahead of schedule in May last year – is the centrepiece of the more than $1 billion Westmead Hospital Redevelopment project.

Key features of the new building include:
  • two new emergency departments — one for adults and one for children
  • 25 digital operating theatres
  • more than 300 patient rooms
  • state-of-the-art pharmacy and medical imaging
  • cardiac inpatient units
  • sterilising service
  • NSW infectious diseases unit
  • new helipad
  • 1.5 floors for the University of Sydney to further integrate education, research and health services
Services began relocating into the new building in February this year, including the Emergency Department, the Central Sterilising Services Department, Perioperative Service and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s Emergency Department.

Westmead is now one of the largest health, education, research and training precincts in Australia, employing more than 18,000 people across the biomedical, health and life sciences fields.
