Health Infrastructure is at the forefront of the development of an innovative, integrated health and education precinct in Western Sydney: linking health professionals with students, researchers and academics in a pioneering approach to future-proofing public health.
Alongside our partners at UrbanGrowth NSW, we are pleased to announce the next step in the process, which is a partnership with the University of Sydney to jointly deliver a new university campus within the Westmead Health and Education Precinct. The campus will join with the existing precinct to drive integration and to create a unique and powerful environment for innovation.
Sydney University – chosen after a three month market-sounding process - expects more than 25,000 students and 2,500 staff to be located on the new campus by 2050, with around 5,000 students located on site by 2027 as part of the first phase of diversification beyond health and medicine to include engineering, information technologies, manufacturing, science and the humanities.
The partnership is also expected to generate more than 20,000 new jobs and inject more than $13 billion into the NSW economy.
It’s an exciting project and one that Health Infrastructure looks forward to negotiating as we work with our partners to develop the master plan over the next two years. The public will also have an opportunity to contribute feedback, so watch this space for more information.
Meanwhile Westmead – already one of the largest integrated precincts in Australia – continues to undergo a $1 billion program of capital works that includes the redevelopment of Westmead Hospital, The Children’s Hospital and precinct car parking.
Stage 1 will deliver a 14-storey central acute services tower which will stand as Australia’s tallest hospital building upon completion. Housing two new emergency departments (one for adults, one for children), digital operating theatres and inpatient units, the tower will co-locate some adult and children’s health services for the first time at the precinct – another innovative step towards more integrated services.
A proposed Westmead Integrated Mental Health Complex is also set to reform and transform Western Sydney’s mental health services, delivering outstanding future support and care for the community.
