Mount Druitt’s brand new Community Dialysis Centre is now open

Mount Druitt’s Community Dialysis Centre is officially open, marking the completion of Stage 2 of the Mount Druitt Hospital expansion project.

The 12-chair dialysis centre, with an Aboriginal Healing Garden, has the capacity to deliver 144 sessions a week to 48 patients needing kidney dialysis.

“This facility has long been a missing link for our service, and the opening has been enthusiastically welcomed by the patients here,” said Associate Professor Lukas Kairaitis, speaking at the official opening.

“As a practicing kidney specialist in western Sydney, I’m proud and delighted to be here to celebrate this important event and to acknowledge the opportunity this unit offers to improve the quality of life for our patients,” he said.

The centre includes an Aboriginal Healing Garden for respite and relaxation with artwork by celebrated local Elder Uncle Danny Eastwood and sculptor Henryk Topolnicki.

“It’s been a great opportunity to work with Western Sydney Local Health District in delivering new and improved services across Mount Druitt and Blacktown,” said Health Infrastructure Project Director Chris Horton.

Mount Druitt Hospital’s Stage 2 expansion includes:

  • A new MRI unit, providing a non-invasive diagnostic service
  • A new recovery area, including peri-operative support
  • A refurbished digital operating theatre;
  • A Centre for Addiction Medicine, including consultation, counselling and support
  • The relocation of existing pre-admission clinics to a new purpose-built unit.

Work is continuing nearby on Blacktown Hospital’s Acute Services Building, which is due for completion next year.
