Construction is now complete on the new $88 million Byron Central Hospital one month ahead of program.
The new state-of-the-art facility includes:
- 24-hour accident and emergency services
- overnight inpatient beds
- low-risk maternity service
- X-ray and medical imaging services, including a CT scanner
- 20 bed non-acute mental health unit
- chemotherapy service
- dental service
- ambulatory care services
Local employment was significantly boosted by the construction of Byron Central Hospital with workers from the Northern Rivers and southeast Queensland comprising 62 per cent of the workforce on-site and a mix of trades, trades assistants, apprentices and construction trainees coming from the Byron Shire itself.
With building works now complete, the Northern NSW Local Health District will begin a commissioning process to transition into the new facility which is expected to be commissioned in May 2016.
