The new Maitland Hospital provides a comprehensive healthcare facility to meet the growing health needs of the Maitland and Hunter communities now and into the future.
OVERVIEW
The new Maitland Hospital offers a wider range of services for the people of the Hunter region delivering an additional 150 beds and treatment spaces to meet the growing healthcare needs of its communities.
The hospital provides emergency care, chemotherapy chairs, surgical services, critical care, maternity services, paediatric care, cardiac catheterisation, mental health, palliative care, outpatient clinics and dental services.
The NSW Government invested $500 million to develop the new Maitland Hospital.
BENEFITS
The project will:
- Deliver a new contemporary facility with a flexible and adaptable design with spaces that can be repurposed in the future to meet the changing healthcare needs of the community
- Embrace technology and innovation to create new ways of working, enhance efficiency and transform the delivery of healthcare for the region, including increased flexibility in the type of surgery being performed
- Offer an emergency short stay unit to the region for the first time to improve the flow of patients through the Emergency Department and reduce patient admittance to the inpatient unit
- Improve patient outcomes through the enhancement of emergency care, chemotherapy, surgical and critical care services, cardiac catheterisation and paediatric care.
SCOPE
The project included:
- A rooftop helipad
- Ten chemotherapy chairs and two enclosed spaces
- Operating theatres and surgical spaces
- Two dedicated endoscopy procedure rooms
- A ‘hot floor’ dedicated to critical care, combining theatres, intensive care, close observation unit, birthing, neonatal special care nursery and a cardiac catheterisation lab
- Maternity and birthing space, including six individual birthing rooms each with a birthing bath
- 12 bed paediatric unit with an additional four beds for day surgery, testing and observation
- Inpatient units
- Additional modern spaces to deliver mental health services
- Expanded outpatient clinics co-located in a centralised setting including an expanded oral health unit
- On grade car park with over 800 spaces.
