New designs unveiled for the St George Hospital Redevelopment

Tueday 23 August 2022

Community feedback helped shape the latest designs for the new state-of-the-art Ambulatory Care Building at St George Hospital redevelopment, unveiled today.

Over 300 meetings with the community, clinicians, hospital staff and consumers informed the hospital’s Stage 3 redevelopment, which recently received an additional $26 million funding boost in the 2022-23 State Budget, bringing the total investment to $411 million.

The Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct brings together a range of ambulatory, outpatient and community services under one roof, making it easier for the community to access.

The designs showcase the new building on Kensington Street and the public forecourt area, which will become the new main entrance for the hospital. It also highlights the building’s façade, greenery, landscaping and integration with the existing hospital campus.

The latest designs were refined following an extensive consultation process, building on the concept designs released in March this year, and have been submitted as part of the State planning application for the project.

The new redevelopment will include:

  • outpatient, ambulatory and integrated care services

  • pathology specimen collection

  • new day rehabilitation unit

  • increased sub-acute and rehabilitation inpatient beds

  • sub-acute aged care unit

  • behavioural management unit

  • acquired Brain Injury unit

  • palliative care

  • surgical services with refurbished operating theatres

  • enhanced diagnostic imaging (medical imaging and nuclear medicine)

  • new clinical skills centre

  • additional parking facilities.

The Stage 3 redevelopment includes an additional $26 million funding boost, which will deliver a new underground car park within the basement levels of the new Ambulatory Care Building.

Significant progress has already been made on the priority and infrastructure works to prepare the site for main works. Work is also progressing on the perioperative refurbishment project with four of the eight operating theatres completed in June. The remaining works, including four procedure rooms will be completed progressively by mid-2023.

Upon approval of the State Significant Development Application, main works will begin on the new Ambulatory Care Building at St George Hospital.
