Take a virtual tour of the new Mother and Baby Unit at Westmead

A virtual tour of the new Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) at the Westmead Health Precinct is providing a look at the specialist care pregnant women, new mothers and their families now have access to.

The state-wide facility, co-designed by women with a lived experience of mental illness, their families and clinicians, was built to ensure new mothers and pregnant women receive the specialist care they need to treat prenatal mental illness without separation from their families.

Each of the 8 private rooms within the Mother and Baby Unit are large enough to accommodate the mother, partner, baby and ensuite to create a family-friendly environment and keep families together during treatment.

The unit offers kitchen facilities, lounge rooms with TVs, and landscaped outdoor areas for exercise, BBQs, relaxation, and family visits.

The MBU also accommodates space and equipment for antenatal care, a 24-hour respite nursery, a parent craft room, a retreat room, consultation and group therapy rooms.

The new facility is open at all hours of every day for women requiring hospitalisation at any time, further reducing pressure on GPs and emergency departments.

The state-wide service is available to western Sydney residents, as well as those from other metro, rural and regional areas in NSW.

The Westmead Mother and Baby Mental Health Unit was delivered as part of the NSW Government’s over $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program.  is the second purpose-built MBU in NSW.

Health Infrastructure is proud to deliver the Westmead Mother and Baby Unit alongside our partners at Western Sydney Local Health District.
