$470 million new Maitland Hospital opens to patients

Thursday 20 January 2022

The $470 million new Maitland Hospital opened its doors to patients this week, bringing new and improved healthcare services to the Maitland region and its surrounds.

Designed in collaboration with staff and the community, the new facility has an additional 150 beds and treatment spaces to meet the growing healthcare needs of its communities, and provides a range of services including:

  • emergency services

  • medical, surgical, paediatric and maternity services

  • critical care services for adults and babies, including a special care nursery

  • operating theatres, delivery suites and assessment rooms

  • palliative care and rehabilitation services

  • mental health services

  • satellite renal dialysis

  • new chemotherapy service

  • expanded oral health service

  • range of ambulatory care and outpatient clinics.

Almost 5,000 new jobs were created as part of the hospital development, supported through the Maitland Connectivity Centre. The Centre, run by Multiplex Constructions in partnership with the NSW Government, offered free training and job placement services throughout the project.

The new hospital also features one of the largest scale paintings commissioned by NSW Health in the hospital’s foyer. The artwork was created by leading artist Peter Poulet and has been inspired by stories from Maitland locals about the region, the river and the old Maitland Hospital.

From Wednesday 19 January the existing Maitland Hospital on High Street will close to the public – with the new hospital managing the growing health service needs for Maitland and the surrounding Hunter Valley community.

Thank you to the community for their involvement and support for the project and congratulations to the project team on achieving this exciting milestone.
