Construction starts on new and enhanced mental health unit at Tamworth Hospital

Tamworth and surrounding communities are a step closer to enhanced mental health support as construction commences on a new mental health unit at Tamworth Hospital.

The purpose-built health facility will provide enhanced mental health services in a modern, culturally safe and supportive environment.

It will also be built with direct access to the hospital, providing mental health support to the community when they need it most.

Feedback from the community, staff and stakeholders has helped shape the design for the new facility which will create a therapeutic space to support better outcomes for people with mental health needs, their families and carers.

The design pays respect to Kamilaroi and Gomeroi cultural elements and values, local landscape inspirations, and is complemented by native garden spaces for communal healing and family support.

The colours of the new unit draw from local inspiration, as well as views of the mountains beyond, their connected skyline and the three rivers surrounding Tamworth, to create a sense of place.

The Tamworth Mental Health Unit is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program.

Hansen Yuncken was appointed to build the new facility with construction expected to be completed in 2025.
