First sod turned for new Maitland Hospital!

​Despite heatwave conditions, the first sod has been turned at the $470 million new Maitland Hospital site at Metford, marking the commencement of early works for the project.

Special guests for the milestone event included Minister for Health the Hon Brad Hazzard, Parliamentary Secretary the Hon Scot MacDonald, Mayor of Maitland City Council, Cr Loretta Baker and Hunter New England Health Chief Executive, Michael DiRienzo.

Representatives from CBRE, Multiplex, Health Infrastructure and the Hunter New England Local Health District attended with excitement to witness this project milestone and look forward to its delivery.

"The sod turn is an important moment for the communities of the Lower Hunter and a significant achievement for the project," said Director for Health Infrastructure's Northern Region, Gillian Geraghty. "With early works now underway, the integrated project team is focused on the delivery of a successful project."

The new Maitland Hospital, tracking for completion in 2022 will provide emergency care, chemotherapy, surgical services, maternity, pediatrics, cardiac catherisation, inpatient beds, mental health, rehabilitation services, palliative care and outpatient clinics. Car parking for patients, staff and visitors is also a priority.
