New age in children’s health care

Friday 17 December 2021

The first look at the $658 million redevelopment for the Sydney Children’s Hospital and Australia’s first Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre has been unveiled in a new fly-through animation.

The redevelopment is part of a record investment of more than $1.3 billion in paediatric healthcare across the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, which will transform child and adolescent health by co-locating clinicians, researchers and educators to accelerate learning discoveries and engage clinical innovation with bedside care.

Patients and their families have been at the centre of planning throughout all stages of the project, ensuring the state-of-the-art paediatric hospital and research facility supports an even higher standard of care and patient amenity than already provided at the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick.

Children, patients, families, staff, researchers, students and community members have shared their experiences in more than 200 forums to inform design of the new health facilities to ensure the new hospital meets the needs of all users now and into the future.

Family rooms, green outdoor areas, play spaces and treatment facilities will be included in the facility’s design to create a welcoming and supportive environment that benefits patients and their families and significantly improves the health care experience.

The redevelopment includes an integrated partnership between the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, Kids Cancer Centre, the Children’s Cancer Institute, and UNSW to achieve the best possible outcomes for children with cancer.

The new hospital building will include:

  • children's emergency department

  • medical short stay unit

  • children's intensive care unit

  • inpatient units for medical, surgical, adolescent, sleep and oncology specialties

  • day oncology centre

  • paediatric pharmacy

  • virtual care centre and hospital command centre

  • neurosciences centre

  • technologically advanced wet and dry laboratories to support cancer research

  • education, training and research spaces

  • collaborative work areas.

Construction will start in the first half of 2022 and the new hospital is scheduled to open in late 2025.

The $658 million investment in the Randwick Sydney Children’s Hospital and Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre includes $478 million from the NSW Government, $100 million from the Commonwealth, $25 million from Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and $25 million from Children’s Cancer Institute. UNSW is providing a $30 million in-kind contribution for the Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre within the adjacent UNSW Health Translation Hub.

The NSW Government has invested over $1 billion in the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct, strengthening health, research, education and innovation outcomes to ensure NSW is at the forefront of health research and education internationally.
