First helicopter lands on top of Nepean Hospital’s new tower

Wednesday 27 October 2021

The $1 billion Nepean Hospital Redevelopment has reached another exciting milestone with the first helicopter landing on top of Nepean Hospital’s new 14-storey tower.

Delivered under Stage 1 of the redevelopment, the roof-top helipad will provide a direct connection to Nepean Hospital’s new emergency department, critical care and neonatal intensive care services.

NSW Ambulance successfully completed a day and night test landing on the rooftop helipad in preparation for the hospital tower’s opening in 2022.

The NSW Government has committed $1 billion to deliver a major expansion and upgrade of Nepean Hospital and community-based services, which is being delivered in two stages.

Construction of the Stage 1 tower is progressing well – delivering an expanded emergency department, 18 birthing suites, a neo-natal intensive care unit, 16 digital operating theatres, more than 200 additional beds and a roof-top helipad.

In parallel with Stage 1 construction, the design and planning for Stage 2 of the redevelopment is well underway with construction scheduled to start following the opening of the Stage 1 tower.

Stage 2 of the Nepean Redevelopment will include a new intensive care unit, in-centre renal dialysis unit, medical imaging and nuclear medicine services, cardiology services, more beds, community health services and a front of house for the hospital.

As part of the NSW Government’s Stage 2 fast-track funding announcement in November 2020, cardiology services and an additional in-patient floor have been incorporated into the Stage 1 tower.

This once-in-a-generation hospital redevelopment will transform the way communities in Penrith and Blue Mountains access care – bringing world-class services much closer to home.
