Tamworth Hospital’s mental health unit will be completely rebuilt to address the community’s need for high-quality and integrated mental health care services.
Following a detailed review of the existing Banksia Unit, it has been determined the facility will be completely rebuilt as an integrated service to enable contemporary care for the community.
The new unit at Tamworth Hospital will be co-designed with people who have lived experience of mental health, family members, carers and staff to create a patient-centred service.
The rebuilt mental health unit is expected to provide up to 33 beds, an increase of eight beds from the previous facility, including eight older person beds.
Master planning is underway to identify a preferred location for the new unit on the hospital campus in consultation with staff and stakeholders. Facility design and planning is expected to start later this year once the location has been identified.
The new unit will be constructed as part of the NSW Government’s $700 million
Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program that is supporting the delivery of mental health care reform in NSW.
