An official opening ceremony was held on Saturday 5 March for the highly anticipated Western Cancer Centre and new three-storey clinical services building at Dubbo Hospital to celebrate a new era in cancer treatment and health care for communities in regional and remote Western NSW.
The two new facilities, which were completed last year, are part a $306.3 million commitment to transform health services in Dubbo, including a $25 million contribution from the Australian Government for the new cancer centre.
The Western Cancer Centre features 16 chemotherapy spaces, a bunker for radiation treatment and a PET CT scanner for cancer diagnostics. It also includes a wellness space to provide support and well-being services to patients and their families.
Designed in close consultation with the community, both facilities feature uplifting artwork, including vibrant external murals, suspended artworks, paintings of the rivers and photographs of local community members in Western NSW, designed to create a welcoming space that is unique to Western NSW region.
Construction of Dubbo Hospital’s new clinical building (Macquarie Building) was completed alongside the Western Cancer Centre with both buildings opening to patients last year.
The new Macquarie Building includes Emergency and Medical Imaging departments, an Ambulatory Care Centre for outpatient services, a Critical Care floor with a new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory and a new front of house.
The redevelopment at Dubbo Hospital will finish with the opening of a new multi-storey car park on campus, which is scheduled for construction completion in a few weeks’ time.
