Site announced for new Shellharbour Hospital

The next generation of healthcare for the people of the Illawarra is one step closer with a preferred site identified for the $700 million-plus development of the new Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services project. 

Following the NSW Government’s recent commitment to build the hospital on a greenfield site, the new state-of-the-art hospital will be built on Dunmore Road, Dunmore. 

Following the announcement, due diligence investigations, including environmental and transport technical studies will start, before formal site acquisition.  

As part of the new Shellharbour Hospital project, a complementary package of works is being scoped to further enhance the healthcare network for the Illawarra Shoalhaven region. 

The new Shellharbour Hospital is expected to include: 

  • expanded emergency services 

  • increased surgical capacity 

  • rehabilitation and aged care services  

  • acute medical services 

  • new mental health services in contemporary, patient-centred facilities 

  • renal dialysis 

  • outpatients and ambulatory care services 

  • car parking and improved public transport links 

The broader integrated health services delivered as part of the project include: 

  • additional subacute services at Bulli 

  • specialised rehabilitation and palliative care services at Wollongong Hospital 

  • new community health facility at Warrawong 

The NSW Government is investing a record $10.7 billion in health infrastructure over the four years to 2024, including more than $900 million in rural and regional areas in 2020-21.
