Expansion of Mental Health Unit at Port Macquarie reaches major milestone

Expansion of the Port Macquarie Mental Health Unit is one step closer to completion, with construction reaching its highest point earlier this week.

Health Infrastructure’s Project Director, David Bedingfield, said it was exciting to see the building nearing completion, almost 12 months after the first sod was turned.

“It was quite something to watch 860 tonnes of contract being poured today,” he said. “The last stages of the building are quickly taking shape and will soon provide world-class mental health facilities to the community.”

When complete in mid-2019, the $17.5 million expansion will provide:
  • Secure patient rooms with natural light
  • Quiet spaces for relaxation
  • A multifunctional activity room
  • Dining and lounge areas
  • Dedicated staff stations
  • Secure landscaped courtyards; and
  • An interview room.
The expanded Mental Health Unit will complement the $104 million major redevelopment of Port Macquarie Base Hospital, completed in December 2014.
