Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital Emergency Department expansion complete

1 October 2020

The $25 million redevelopment of Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital’s Emergency Department is now open, providing world-class emergency medical care to meet the needs of the growing south western Sydney community.

The new build delivers:
  • an increase in adult and paediatric treatment spaces and a dedicated waiting area
  • enhanced emergency care in a safe, contemporary facility
  • faster initiation of treatment
  • reduced hospital stays due to additional Emergency Department short-stay unit capacity
  • streaming of patients to the most appropriate environment of care to reflect their level of complexity
  • best practice arrangements for mental health, paediatric and bariatric patient.
The project is a combination of a new building and refurbishment of the existing space to deliver contemporary facilities that enhance patient care.

The increase in treatment spaces, and new layout of the department, allows staff to prioritise patients based on the level of care they require, allowing for faster treatment and reduced hospital stays due to additional short-stay unit capacity.

Works continue on the refurbishment of existing spaces, with overall project completion expected in early 2021.
An additional $1.3 billion has been announced to build a new Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital on a new greenfield site. Planning for the project has begun and site investigations are underway. The redevelopment of the current Emergency Department will ensure the community continues to have access to high quality emergency care until the new hospital is built.

Other Health Infrastructure projects in south western Sydney include the $632 million Stage 2 Campbelltown Hospital Redevelopment and the $740 million redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital.
