Tuesday 9 November 2021

Patients in the Sutherland Shire are set to benefit from state-of-the-art operating theatres and an MRI facility closer to home as part of the $88.5 million upgrade to Sutherland Hospital.

A sod turn has marked the start of construction by Hindmarsh Construction Pty Ltd, which was awarded the main works contract following a competitive tender process.

Sutherland Hospital Operating Theatre Complex will include new operating theatres and procedure rooms, surgical short stay unit, new staff amenities and workspaces, facilities for admission and discharge and a new central sterilising services department.

The NSW Government has also committed an additional $7 million in funding foran MRI facility at Sutherland Hospital. The new MRI suite will reduce the need to transfer patients for MRI scans.

The $88.5 million project will support approximately 100 direct jobs, with the potential to support hundreds of indirect jobs over the life of the project across the planning and construction stages.

The MRI facility is scheduled to be open to patients in 2023, and construction on the Operating Theatre Complex is scheduled for completion in 2024.
