New designs unveiled for Stage 2 of $1 billion Nepean Redevelopment

Thursday 11 November 2021

New fly-through animation for Nepean Redevelopment Stage 2 was unveiled today providing a first look at the state-of-the-art health facilities, which will continue to transform health services for the region.

This once-in-a-generation hospital redevelopment will transform the way communities in Penrith and Blue Mountains access care – bringing world-class services much closer to home.

The digital fly-through reveals an open, bright and contemporary design for the new Stage 2 building, which will seamlessly connect to the Stage 1 tower that is currently under construction.

The new designs for Stage 2 are the result of an extensive planning and consultation process between the lead design team, NSW Health experts, hospital and community health staff and community representatives.

Today’s announcement will be followed by the lodgement of a State Significant Development Application (SSDA) with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment later in the year.

A range of essential health services will be delivered in Stage 2 including a new intensive care unit, in-centre renal dialysis unit, medical imaging and nuclear medicine services, cardiology services, community health, as well as a new hospital main entry and front of house.

Construction on the new Stage 1 14-storey tower continues and is on schedule to open in 2022. It includes a new emergency department, maternity unit, neonatal intensive care unit, operating theatres, more in-patient beds and a roof-top helipad.

The Stage 1 tower will also include a new cardiology department and an additional in-patient floor as part of the NSW Government’s Stage 2 fast-track funding announcement in November 2020.

Construction of the Stage 2 will start in 2022 following the completion of the new 14-storey tower.
