New and expanded Pathology Lab opens at Nepean Hospital

Minister for Health and Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park joined health workers at the official opening of the new Pathology Laboratory for Nepean Hospital.

The laboratory has been delivered as part of Stage 2 of the $1 billion Nepean Hospital redevelopment. The pathology laboratory is double the size of the previous facility and one of the first in NSW to be fitted with the latest diagnostic equipment, enhancing pathology services for Penrith and Blue Mountains communities.

It is also one of the first NSW Health Pathology laboratories to benefit from an upgrade to chemical pathology analyser equipment.

The Nepean pathology department processed 1.2 million tests from Nepean Hospital patients last year, and the installation of the latest automation technology will improve efficiencies around movement and processing of samples even further.

The new facility was fast tracked as part of the Nepean Hospital Redevelopment Stage 2 to enable the progress of other works on site, including the construction of a second hospital building to house a new intensive care unit, renal services, medical imaging, more in-patient units, and an accessible and welcoming front-of-house for the hospital.

As part of the Stage 2 redevelopment, planning and design of a new community health centre is underway to meet the needs of the growing community in Western Sydney and better health outcomes for the future.

Stage 2 is part of a $1 billion Nepean to deliver a major upgrade and expansion of hospital and community-based health services for the Penrith and Blue Mountains communities.
