Construction starts on Nepean Hospital’s new Pathology Department

Wednesday 24 August 2022

Construction is under way on a new and expanded Pathology Department being delivered as part of the $1 billion Nepean Hospital Redevelopment.

The new Pathology Department is a key part of the expanded care and treatment at Nepean Hospital, which will provide communities in Penrith and the Blue Mountains with access to world-class health care now, and well into the future.

The Pathology Expansion Project, which includes a newly built facility with new laboratories, a pathology reception area and administration spaces is being fast-tracked as part of the Nepean Hospital Stage 2 redevelopment boosting health outcomes for our local community.

The project will relocate the existing Pathology Department into a larger, purpose-built facility on the ground floor of Building E (East Block), significantly expanding pathology services to support the uplift in clinical services being delivered as part of the hospital’s redevelopment.

Construction of the new Pathology Department is scheduled for completion in mid-2023.

Building contractor, Lipman Pty Ltd was recently awarded the contract to deliver the project, with enabling works including demolition being carried out ahead of construction of the new hospital building.

Construction of the new 14-storey clinical tower delivered under Stage 1 of the $1 billion redevelopment is now complete, and floors are opening to patients and staff in stages this year.

Early works for the new Stage 2 building are scheduled to start later this year, following the award of the construction tender.

Stage 2 includes a new intensive care unit, in-centre renal dialysis unit, medical imaging and nuclear medicine services, cardiology services, more beds, community health services and a front of house for the hospital.

Construction is being carefully staged to minimise disruption to patients, visitors and staff, and to maintain hospital services at all times.
